Quilting Acronyms & Getting Organized

Have you ever gotten the urge to organize all those patterns and how-to's you have printed off the internet? Well, that's what I did yesterday. I went to grab my notebook with all "important" quilty stuff and it fell apart....it was a little full LOL. So I sat down and went through every piece of paper.

The items that I had printed out twice or more, I kept as I just might refer back to them. After all, if I thought it was good enough that many times, it's a keeper.

I kept most of the applique patterns, though I ended up tossing two BOMs that I collected. They just didn't appeal to me anymore.

I've been rewriting my Hand Piecing hand-outs I use when teaching and I think I have that more organized now...it's still not completely rewritten, but at least when I pick it up again, I'll know where I left off.

In amongst the mess I found this item that was written by Betty J., a forum friend on the About Quilting site. She wrote this for another group and was used in a quilting lecture for a guild (I've changed this a bit):

Quilting Acronyms

Projects start out as WHIMMs (Works Hidden in My Mind)

When you make the purchase of pattern and fabric you have PIGS (Project In a Grocery Sack) or PITS (Project In Totes) At this time it may also be a brazen HSY (Haven't Started Yet, pronounced hussy)

Once you start, it is a WIP (Work In Progress). It is a WIP until completed.

Once you loose interest and set it aside, it's a UFO (UnFinished Object)

When you pick up a UFO and actually finish it, you can shout TGIF (Thank God It's Finished) At this point you can post photos and get tons of praise for a job well done. You will also hear many laments about the number of UFO's accumulating in the closets of these same people. You get to feel superior because you finished yours...do not mention how many new PIGS, PITS or HSYs you collected while finishing this UFO....save this information for another day.

A Little About Your STASH

As quilters we all have a STASH (Special Treasures All Secretly Hidden), these fabrics can be used for current projects but are often not disturbed. If you use it, you can't reorganize it and spend hours petting it, right? So we call our friends and organize a FART (Fabric Acquisition Road Trip). These are the best because we all need a little SEX (Stash Enhancing eXperience) once in a while.

The final important thing about your stash is to leave your SABLE (Stash Accumulation Beyond Life Expectancy) to your fabric loving heirs. Get it in your wills girls, you don't want someone to just toss it!!!! Also try not to leave any WOMBATs (Waste Of Money, Batting And Time) type projects, but if you do, someone will love it because YOU made it.

What a great post. I need to make a list of all my WHIMM's, PIT's HSY's, WIP's & UFO's so I can shout TGIF.

It's funny how we all have to take time out and organize everything. The treasures we discover when we do that. Thanks so much for the acronyms. They make such good sense. I already have so many UFOs, I don't like them anymore. I think I will just tie them and donate them to a shelter. They will be loved there.

I love this list...I have it somewhere in my "saved" stuff on the computer and enjoy reading it each time I come across it. Thanks for sharing it here!

I loved that, I will have to use it as a reference when people type that jargon on their blogs. Thanks.

I have been doing the same thing with my printed off patterns. I started collecting the Bunny Hill BOM and needed another notebook to file them for future use. I love collecting the patterns, as they refresh my soul in remembering why I loved them so much. Maybe one day I will be able to take my time and enjoy making these patterns. They may be vintage by then, but hey, everyone likes vintage at some point :-)

I'm generally an organized person, but since starting quilting, I find that my area of sewing is sometimes disorganized.
After each project, I usually organize again so that I can focus my mind on the next project.
It's a difficult procedure. I agree with all your comments.

You have enlightened me with the acronyms, I have all of those and more. Collectively I just call it all "stuff" and I have a lot of stuff.

I need to organize my patterns neater also, a couple days ago I was looking for something and threw out a couple that I had printed off too - thinking why did I print that - amazing how something can look different several months later.

The blessing and the problem with all the information and free patterns available is all the paper we all accumulate!!! This year I've tried to be very organized and either immediately file whatever into a folder or just save it in a folder on my computer. That lasted about 6 weeks. Now the mess has begun again!

Enjoyed this so much. Some of them cracked me up. Some I'd seen before - some were new to me.

Congrats on the organization - always fun to have things neatened (is that a word?) up.

I have one more for you: As you stated when you start a project it goes from HSY to WIP.

Then you work on the project but only pick it up once or twice a month (or year or once every two to five years) and it becomes a WISP (Work in Slow Progress) -- still on your "to be completed" list, just not a priority. The hope is that it will not become a UFO.

I actually got these terms from Nancy Goldsworthy's book "The Quilters Guide To UFOs" and love them because they ring so true and we all have them.
