Now Jo lives in northern Washington State so I'm sure her mountain represents Mt Baker, a large mountain in the northern Cascade Mountains. I lived in the Seattle area so "my" mountain represents Mt Rainier, a VERY large mountain in the southern Cascade Mountains. Either way, I look at this block and think of home and I truly thank Jo for sharing it with me.
I wanted to share how I approach making an applique block. With this pattern, I drafted it up in EQ and printed it directly onto freezer paper, when it's a large pattern I trace it onto freezer paper. I then number the order inwhich I will apply them and put an arrow at the edges that go UNDER another piece.

I then make a vinyl overlay of the entire pattern.

I audition fabrics.

Once I decide on them, I cut the freezer paper pattern apart, iron it to the front of the fabric and trace around the template ONLY where the piece is stitched, not where it goes under another piece, this is where those arrows come in handy.

I have this thing about not liking to use knots and I don't use them in needle turn applique if I can avoid it. What I do is gently pull back the piece and take a stitch then a back stitch into the background fabric.

I flip the piece back into position, turn under the edge and bring the needle up into the fold then directly down into the background and continue stitching. The anchoring of the end of the thread is hidden, no tails showing and no knot creeping into the turn under causing a lump.

I apologize, I should have taken a couple more pictures and will try to remember to take one of what the piece looks like after I trace around it and when I take my first stitch after hiding the anchor stitch.

Very innovative Crispy. I love the scene within the apple.
Thats a nice block. Thanks for the tutorial. Even though I'm far from the moutains I just might make this block.
What a great block! Great way to remember somewhere!
Your work is so incredibly neat. I truly enjoy looking at your projects! NICE pattern Jo made, too.
Wonderful tutorial!! Your stitches are perfect!
Now that is an apple block! What a creative idea. I would have to do an orange with some Florida like on it. I prefer the apple with the mountain.
Aww - you made my block so pretty. I'm sure Mt. Baker would share with Mt. Ranier - or even Mt. Shasta if someone is from CA (well I am from CA but have to play "WA" now) LOL
I should post a photo of mine for comparison - I really like your colors. I tend more towards pastels - I like the vividness of the block.
Wow, that's an incredible block! Thanks for the little tute!

Crispy, this is a cute, cute block. I love the vividness of it. Thanks for the tutorial. Winona
What a gorgeous wee block and so novel.
That is a very clever design!
Beautiful Block. I have trouble with needle turn applique. I can do it but I cheat and use the freezer paper method and glue sticks. I know practice practice. Chris

Amazing block! I love it. You do such beautiful work. Thanks for sharing your tips.
OOOOOOOOOh I love it! Here in Ontario, we have what you would call big hills, although we do call them mountains sometimes. That is just perfect for the fall.
Great WA block, Crispy; I love your fabric choices!
Crispy, this is stunning! I love the colors you used!
I love the colors in the block, and the mountain in the apple is just adorable! Great job!
Beautiful block Chris. I lived in Washington State for five years and loved it.

Such a fun pattern. Thanks for sharing how you go about appliquing.
I love you apple block. Thanks for sharing your technique with your hand sewing. Hopefully my friend is going to show me how to hand sew. Do you use a silk thread?? My friend told me to buy YLI Silk thread 100 wt., is this the best? You know I have to learn from a pro. :)
I LUV the apple block! The Adirondacks are the closest mountains to me in NYS. I appreciate the sweetness of this block..how inovative Jo is! Thanks for the awesome tutorial!
