Normally I would not start appliqueing so close to a point, but I wanted to stitch down the top of the green piece so I could trim the excess fabric away. I started a couple of stitches from where the blue part of the flower goes under the green.
I gently lift the green fabric to expose the turn under so I know how much to trim of the excess fabric.
This is always the scary part....what if I accidentally cut the wrong thing or trim away too much of the excess!!! So I take a deep breath and trim very very carefully with a pair of really sharp scissors:

I trim the excess close to the turn under, a little extra isn't a bad thing, however, when there are deep V's, like in the middle of the stem, I always leave plenty at the point. If there is too much, I'll trim it when I get to that area.

So that's how I handle those situations. I only have two more flowers to sew on and need to figure out what I want to do for the center, but I'm working extra days this week, as Bob is taking some time off and I have to fill in for him. It's a good thing, he's getting many things crossed out on the Honey Do list :0)

Off to sew a little before I have to go to work. You all have a lovely day!!

Love your AUnt Millie. The colors are fabulous!
That is such an amazing block!! I like to trim as well, but with my weird method, I constuct little "units," trimming as I go. Then once the flower is all done, I plop it down on the backing and do the final applique. Your quilt is going to be AMAZING!!!!!
In stitches,
Teresa :o)
