A Giveaway, A Gift, Aunt Millie And A Tutorial

Giveaway

My friend Lena at LekaQuilt is having a giveaway!! She's giving away these cute little bags. I know they are cute because I won one from her before :0) Since I won one I will not be entering this giveaway (one more chance for you to win). This ends on September 14th so head on over and sign up!!

A Gift

Last week, I was reading my friend Terri's blog, Quilternity's Place, and she was showing another pair of beautiful socks she had knitted. I asked her how many pair she had made so far and guess what....she sent me a pair!! They are soooo pretty and VERY warm. I can hardly wait for cold weather so I can wear them :0) Thank You Terri!!

Aunt Millie Block

Here is my finished current Aunt Millie block. I was going to do a post with just the partial block but was very close to being done so put this post on hold until after I vacuumed and finished the block :0) Hardly any unsewing was done with this block, except on two of the flowers. I had sewn the pink and the stem "off the block" and then did the next one "on the block" and liked the way it lay much more. So I unsewed the bottom of the pink strip and then resewed it through to the back. Anyhoo, another done and only 3 more to go Woo Hoo!!

Oh, one thing I did different on this block is that I put a line of basting down the folds, only to the point that they wouldn't interfere with the applique. I was getting tired of having my folds relaxing so I couldn't line up my overlay. This worked VERY well.

Tutorial

This block had narrow points so I had to trim the seam allowance. This is how I do this:

I sew up to the point, trim off the dog ear and then remove the next two pins.

Open the applique gently and trim the seam allowance, which was just sewed down, to a scant 1/8th inch.

No need to trim the whole seam, just trim to where the leaf gets wide enough for the seam allowances.

How I turn the point is shown in the Points On Leaves tutorial. By trimming the seam allowance, it makes a much smoother, less bulky point.

Off to figure out what I'm going to do for the next block :0)

I love the socks and the block. Great tutorial. I'm not very clever at comments tonight. We just got home from the beach - took a picnic and stayed until after the sunset - it was spectacular - and now I'm done for the day. Nitey nite.

Beautiful block and a very good tutorial. The socks you received are so pretty. I have one pair of hand-knitted socks that a blogging friend in NH made for me and I am so excited to wear them soon, too. Well...maybe not soon (with the heat we currently have), but you know what I mean....

Oh my word that's gorgeous! I'm loving watching these blocks progress. You finish one and I think, "well, that's it, THAT is the best one." And then you do another. And another. Sigh... thanks for the beautiful pictures.

wonderful idea for trimming the part you had just sewn down - I will give that a try on the block I am currently working on - I have difficulty making the point as pointed as it should be.

Love the tute! If I ever get around to hand work, I'm sure these little tutorials will help, along with Helen.
The socks are georgous! Those North Dakota winters will bring warmth to your tootsies. Helen knits lovely socks too and her daughter Andrea is always showing me "another pair"...I'm going to knit when in recovery from hip surgery.
