Making Some Quilting Progress!!

I have the Wonky House quilt into the hoop and have started the hand quilting. I'm happy to report that I'm not sick of hand quilting (I was afraid the NYB ruined my favorite quilting process). I haven't decided how I want to quilt the house blocks so am just doing the outline and in the ditch parts for now:

I was happy to find a piece of Moda Marble in my stash for the backing. I was going to use the left over fat quarters from the line of fabric I used for the houses but wasn't excited about piecing the back and having those extra seams to quilt through. Good thing I went shopping in my stash :0)

I have a scrapbooking template that I used for the swirl in the 9 patch squares (no I don't scrapbook, I just thought the shapes on the template would be great for quilting). I love the movement it gives these blocks:

The backing fabric for the Stars & Sprigs is in the dryer and I hope to get one sprig and one star block started today and maybe even finished tomorrow.

It sure is wonderful being excited about quilting again!!

There are so many awful weather related things going on in the world. Please add the folks in Bismarck that are being flooded out due to record releases of water from the dams to your prayers. This will be the worse flooding in history for Bismarck and could possible last well into July. I am thankful that I will be high and dry in my little town, but I was shocked to see how high the Missouri River is right now let alone after the bigger water releases.

Thank You,

Crispy

wow - and the Missouri river comes down through the Mississippi River which is still flooding the folks down in Louisiana right now!! It never ends this year does it. Glad you are high and dry -- the quilting looks great - I had not thought to look through the scrapbooking stuff for stencils for quilting.

I love your quilting! How do you baste your quilts before you can hoop them?

Chris, your Wonkie House looks great so far. Things just pop. I love those spirals in the nine-patch. Hmmm, may have to try that instead of stitching 'X's. LOL We are having issues with the Missouri River around here too. Fortunately, we are high enough not to have to worry about flooding, but a lot of our county is not. I will also keep Bismarck in my prayers.

I love how your wonky houses quilt is going. Do you do the nine spirals at the same time ie 9 needles, one for each square, or do you spin the quilt around one square at a time. I avoid circle quilting for that reason.
I feel so bad for the people suffering from natural disasters. It must be devestating.

I love your new fabrics from the last post too. I look forward to seeing your Stars and Sprigs! :)

it looks so inviting, your little house....we've had crazy weather here too in Ontario. This morning the sun is shining and we will have a high of 73 today...perfect for packing up.

Oh Crispy, I LOVE those swirls!!! Are they 6 inch blocks, or 9? The Wonky Houses just pop from the outline qulting. I knew you would be in love with hand quilting still...just a step back form a project is all that is needed. I had the same thing happen with the Pink and Brown and that blasted motif. Eventually I went back to it too and it is my pride and joy on my bed!
Praying for Bismark. We are suffering crazy large hail and tornadoes here. More tornandoes here this SPring than in the last 20 put together.

I am so glad you've got your quilting mojo back! I adore the swirls on your 9 patch - I wouldn't have thought of that - I'll have to snoop through my friend's scrapbooking templates now :0)

What a sweet project to be quilting on!! I do the same thing when I am not sure what to quilt...do the outline quilting first!

Are you having blogger issues? I find that I can comment on some blogs, but not others. And I can't comment at all on international blogs.

In stitches,
Teresa :o)

You are off to a great start with your hand quilting and I do love the swirls. My sister scrapbooks and I look at her templates the same way you do! LOL.

Crispy, Great job thinking outside the nine dots with that beautiful swirl design!

Mother Nature can be brutal, can't she? It makes me realize how little control I have over anything really important.

It's exciting to watch it come together. Love those swirls. I would never have thought to use scrapbooking templates for quilting templates. Great idea!

Your wonky houses are beautiful! What a joy it is to see your work. What types of batting and needles do you use? I am finishing a hand-stitched quilt for my younger daughter and I used a silk batting which is wonderful. The needle slides well through the fibres. Arthritis is a nuisance but at the very least, the stitches are relatively uniform in size. Well done Chris!

Your swirl quilting pattern is great for your nine patch. Good job, as usual.

I love the swirl and I am very happy that you are enjoying hand quilting again. Sometimes just putting aside the project that is blocking us is all that is needed.
