More Hand Quilting And A New Book

I've hit a creative wall on the last 3 house blocks on the Wonky quilt. I know what elements I want to add, I just can't seem to get a combination that works for me. So while I mull them over in my head I decided to work on the border. I hopped onto EQ to figure out the spacing for those house shapes I mentioned a couple of posts ago, but the math was just too much for this old head, so decided on wavy lines. I was sure this would be much easier....NOT LOL. I just couldn't get a good flow around the corners, the main reason being the template was not symetrical. So after drawing and then spritzing the lines off I decided to go with this:

Instead of trying to make it flow around the corners, I just stopped them at the corner and put a swirl in:

Not the best design as far as making it flow but I'm tired of messing with it and it will just have to do :0)

Friends and Bloggers can be a bad influence on me. I had bought the Sylvia's Sampler book, sight unseen and really regretted the purchase, thus I gave it away. I have known about this book for a long time but have resisted buying it because I had never seen the book in person:

I have seen this project on many blogs but when my long time on-line friend Karen started working on this project I was very tempted to buy it, again. THEN I went to my friend Rita's and she was showing the book to her sister. I could hardly wait to get my hands on it to see what it looked like. That did it, I ordered the book. Now I have no idea when I'll start this project, as I want to do the Stars & Sprigs quilt next....but at least I own the book :0)

Do you ever buy a book or pattern and then regret the purchase?

Only a time or two. I usually buy a book if there is more than one pattern I like. But many times I enjoy seeing the designs and the color way. I think you will enjoy this new book.

I can't wait to start seeing some FW blocks from you. I know you hate CW fabrics so I am curious as to what combo you will go with.

I have a lot of book regrets and now I only purchase a book after I have really looked at it and even then I wait most of the time. I honestly have enough books and patterns to keep me for years. LOL!

books and patterns arent in the budget. Once in a while i will find a magazine with a few inspiring quilts that i buy. I guess ive just never been good at following directions so i rarely use a pattern!

Yes, I totally regret buying Eleanor Burns Quilt in a Day, Day & Night. My sister wanted me to make a quilt using it so I foolishly bought it without looking at it closely. You waste too much fabric with her method...and then I found a paper piecing pattern for the Day and Night block on the internet for free!

I so enjoy seeing the process of how you decide on the quilting and your hand piecing.

I have stopped buying books...HA!!! truly...really...but I do have alot of books that I do not need or want any more.

I like the solution you've decided on for your border and it makes sense to bring the swirls in again.
I rarely buy books for patterns because I draft my own, but quilt history books? can't get enough of them! jam packed with inspiration.

I like how you're going to quilt the borders. I think your solution for the corners is a good one. That swirl is so great - why not repeat it in the corners!
I hope you dream up some ideas for the last few houses :0)

I love your solution to turning the corner with your quilting!

The only books I've regretted buying are those that turn out to be duplicates. I've done it more than once! LOL

Do I make book/pattern/fabric choices I regret? NO NO NO not me. Are you kidding? I think everything through and carefully evaluate my needs and time constraints. YUP I do...

ABSOLUTELY!! But then if I do not get a quilt started I just figure I enjoyed the book for a while, reading it and looking at the quilt pictures. I frequently have little ebay garage sales from my sewing room bookshelf. I have gotten better about more careful purchases but every once in a while I will fall off the wagon. Enjoy the book and the read!

oh gosh, all the time. I have a room full of them. I can't wait to see your Stars and Sprigs, it will be outstanding. I was thinking of buying it myself, but haven't.

Choosing a quiltdesign is one of the hardest things if you ask me! Your solution looks great though.
I have lots of books and some are a bit dissapointing, but I get something out of every one; a colourscheme, a technique, a pattern... I get most of them at bookdepository and to Dutch standards very cheap. I'm mainly selfthaught so books are my guidance!

I like the spiral in the corner and think it will look just fine. The fabrics have a design on them and I find that quilting designs on those type fabrics don't show like on a more solid look.

I think we all have done that. That is why I have so much stuff. LOL I have this book and love it. I am trying to start on the blocks. Gone so far as pulling a few fabrics, but still need to get started. I find that actually getting started on a new project is the hardest part of quilting. LOL I think your quilting design will be very pretty.

I think the corners are a good solution.
As for books, usually the nicest quilt is on the cover. If I don't like that, I won't even open the book. Blogs are a great resource for ogling beautiful quilts and far cheaper.

Crispy, I love your use of the swirls with the wavy lines. They go together perfectly :)

And, yes, I make many purchases that I regret. Anybody recommends something, I just HAVE to get it LOL :)

I love books and magazines. I wanted to be a librarian back in the day. I have a big collection of quilting/craft books, and patterns, too. I have bought some books twice because I did not remember I already had a copy! I have also given many books away because I never got around to doing anything with them, but I had to have that book anyway.

I am almost always happy with the books that I buy because I generally check them out from the library first. If I find a specific project that I want to do soon, I will buy the book. Otherwise, I keep a list of books with authors and notes about the kind of projects. Then when I want to find a new pattern for a type of quilt, such as a quilt for teens, I can look at the list for suggestions. I also include titles that I liked but didn't buy at that time.

I like your swirl in the corner and I think the border design will work.
I have bought a few books when I first started quilting that I wish I wouldn't have. Now I am more careful.

Deciding on a quilting pattern can be very difficult, but it looks like you are on the right track now.

Before I purchase a book, I try to see the book in person or Google the book on-line. It is amazing how much of the inside of a book you can see. Not all books, but many.

On occasion I have regretted buying a book, but not often. Most recently when I bought two of the same book! Not that I didn't like the book, mind. The second book got given as a gift to my sister, so all was well.
You will be glad that you drafted the FWS blocks into EQ. I did as well, although lots of them are available in blockbase. The enclosed CD is pretty worthless, in my not so humble opinion, since it only prints one template per page. The only time I printed one was for basket handles. The CDs are also fragile, so download it to your computer, just to be on the safe side, if you think you will use it at all.
I like the wonky houses quilting, always a tough decision for me, how to quilt it. I am thinking Baptist Fan for my FWS, almost next on the quilting front (borders to go!)

I also bought this book and as I had done Dear Jane I was used to more templates or foundation for doing the blocks. I was unhappy with the purchase and wish I had known how the CD would be. Now it just hangs out with the other 20 books that I did not need!
